Spring/Fall Clean-Ups

Spring Clean-up

In Calgary, spring clean-up for your yard is best done once the snow has melted and the frost is out of the ground but before the grass starts to grow. Our packages offer Lawn Aeration, Power Raking (dethatching), Hand raking, First Cut and Fertilizer.

Lawn Aeration: Lawn aeration is the process of punching holes in your lawn’s surface to abate soil compaction. Soil compaction hinders the effectiveness of watering and fertilization. Through aeration, you help control the lawn’s thatch and encourage better root development. Most experts recommend aeration 1 to 2 times a year for the best results.

Power Raking: Power Raking removes unwanted thatch from your lawn. Thatch, simply put, is the layer of dead grass and organic materials at the base of your grass. It is important to maintain a minimum level of thatch in your lawn to help with water retention and in the prevention of the sun burning your lawn’s roots. That said, too much thatch provides an environment for pests, disease, and poor water and fertilizer retention for your lawn.

Hand Raking and Blowout: The majority of our dethatching is achieved through professional power rakers. We hand rake the thatch that is brought up from our machines and debris left over from the fall and winter. All materials are removed off site and taken to our composting facility. We also do a blowout of beds and hedges around the perimeter of the yard. However, if there is a significant amount of leaves/debris, our price will be adjusted due to the extra time required and hauling of materials.

First Cut: After aeration, power raking and hand raking are completed, we give the lawn a first cut of the season. This helps vacuum up any loose thatch that wasn’t picked up. Cutting the grass to the proper height also readies the lawn for the spring growth.

Fertilizer: Just as humans need nutrients, so does your lawn. Over time soil can lose much of its nutrients. Fertilizer will help your lawn look better and last longer. Protect your investment in your lawn by feeding it regularly in an environmentally sustainable way.

Fall Clean-up

Prior to the winter snow, it’s important to remove the excess leaves from your lawn so that the lawn isn’t smothered in the spring. More importantly the leaves left over the winter can lead to snow mould and turf damage from vermin like voles. A simple leaf clean-up can help prevent these issues. In the fall we also provide fall aeration and fertilizer applications to help prepare your lawn for the spring growing season.
